BattleBorn – PREVIEW

battleborn

Battleborn is a first-person shooter developed by Gearbox Software and will be published by 2K games. Gearbox was previously involved in the development of Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines, but they are most notably known for their immensely funny and chaotic IP called Borderlands. Battlebornbattleborn will be their second original property and will somewhat mimic certain elements of their previous series, specifically the visual style, minus the actual cel-shading, the humor, and the big action with outrageous bad-ass characters.

Background

The game takes place on Solus, a star for which all species in the universe have congregated in a desperate battlebornattempt to flee the sweeping destruction of a cataclysmic event that caused nearly every star and planet in existence to be obliterated.

The species were at odds when they began their new life on this shared home. They separated themselves into their own factions, but with the encroaching menace known as the Varelsi, the deliverers of the unimaginable death and destruction in the universe, they decided to cooperate and unite against their common enemy. They did so by assembling a collection of their best fighters, bestowed the title of Battleborn, to dwindle, dominate, and defeat the Varelsi.

Gameplay

Battleborn is described as an FPS in a multiplayer online battle arena format, but it is not a MOBA in the traditional sense. Obviously, there are significantbattleborn comparisons to the MOBA genre but it also infuses elements from role-playing games. This means that there is a focus on developing a collection of unique and detailed characters with a strong enough personality to perhaps helm their own game. A large cast of characters may not be something new to the battle arena genre, though these are far more in-depth characters than you would have seen elsewhere, Battleborn uses them to tell a story. Battleborn extends the team-based combat into a complete team-based experience, which includes having the protagonist you and your friends choose collectively and deeply involved in the narrative.

battlebornOne of the most interesting parts of the game will be how the developers manage to weave in the story through the MOBA format and whether the action on screen will be all that important to the overarching narrative.

On the other hand if you are looking for strictly mindless combat there is a 5v5 competitive multiplayer mode, which includes three different modes: Incursion (base destruction), Devastation (base capture), and Meltdown (an arena mode).

There is an enormous roster of 25 characters that each possess their own unique personalities, abilities, andbattleborn weapons. For instance, there is a ranged robotic butler named Marquis equipped with a quick wit, a sniper, and a pet owl named Houdini. On the other hand there is someone like Miko, a sentient fungus, who is considered a support class with his sparse use of kunai throwing knives and plethora of fungal healing and poison variations, which actually includes lobbing his own head into the fray. There is great variety in the characters both aesthetically and in combat to add more replay-ability and meaningful player contributions within a team.

The leveling system in Battleborn restricts the players’ progression to within each specific match.  The reset for the level is only referring to the player and not to the particular character you are using, which allows you to rank up to level 10. Each player will start the game at the same level and you will gain experience throughout that game to unlock new abilities and skills. These improvements are part of your character’s Helix skill tree, which allows you to pick one of three choices once you have leveled up.
