BACKGROUND

Far Cry Primal is set in the wilds of the fictional open world Oros, during the Mesolithic period – 12,000 years ago. The environment is a major focus and far primalmore dense and detailed than we have seen in the past. Behind every shrub, every rock, and every log there is something out there ready to rip you to shreds. There is wildlife consisting of mostly docile woolly mammoths, packs of ravenous wolves, and even the vicious saber-toothed tiger. This is a time when man was not the top of the food chain and therefore, unlike Far Cry primalgames of the past, every interaction is a fight for survival. You are in a constant battle with not only nature but brutish rival tribes, and that is where the new story begins.

You play as Takkar a wandering, lone, unarmed hunter who has been separated from his tribe’s hunting party after they were ambushed by another deadly warmongering tribe. This ambush leads Takkar to be stranded in Oros without his weapons or any vital resources for survival in this natural battleground. What he does have is the ability to tame wild animals – gaining their trust, and partnering with them to survive.

The arc of the game will consist of moving you from this bare and vulnerable hunter into an eventual rise as the leader of a tribe.

GAMEPLAY

The game takes place in pre-historic times and thus the typical Far Cry gameplay formula will change. No longer will there be vehicles and guns to tear up a slewprimal of rebels or gangs, but it will still have the same feel that the previous games had. Players instead have melee weapons like: clubs and axes, and ranged weapons like spears, and bows. Previously you would unlock and buy these weapons, but this time you are only able to get weapons that you craft with your own two hands from materials you find out in the wilderness.

Aside from fighting natural predators, you have an opportunity to build and lead your own tribe to conquer other threatening tribes as a way to maintain safety and supremacy in Oros. You are tasked with the organization and welfare of the members of your tribe – requiring you to be wary of dangerous ambushes and sneak attacks that may occur as the day-night cycle progresses.

primalA big part of combat is the introduction of animal companions that can fight alongside you. Being that Takkar is a “Beast Master” he possesses the ability to pacify even the most deadly and feral of creatures that roam the Stone Age forests. You can team up with something as unassuming as a badger or as immediately threatening as a saber-toothed tiger. In each instance, you use your hunting sleuth tactics to get close to the beast, perhaps leaving a slab of meat for them as a distraction, then soothing them and demonstrating trust.

Once a feral animal has been tamed you can issue commands to move, search, or fight. But they do not simply follow yourprimal explicit commands; they will act on their own in your favor by growling at nearby danger or leaping into action before an enemy approaches you. Each companion will exhibit different behaviors and their strengths can be used tactically as the player can summon them at will.

Far Cry Primal will certainly be a new direction for the series that focuses on ideas that may have been secondary on other titles. For instance, there is a greater focus on the dangers of the elements by placing you in a position to be prey, and the powers of the mystical with the ability to soothe teeth baring animals and summoning an owl you can control.
